Sun Tea (Migraine-Friendly & Caffeine-Free)

One of my favorite summer (and early fall) traditions is making Sun Tea. There’s just nothing more refreshing than a tall glass of iced tea on a warm day. If you’ve never tried it before, Sun Tea is super easy to make—you simply let the sun do the work of steeping the tea!

Why Herbal Tea?

If you’re following the Migraine Diet, caffeine is something to limit—and that includes coffee, black tea, green tea, and even decaf versions (since they’re chemically processed). The good news is that herbal teas are naturally caffeine-free, which makes them a safe and refreshing choice.

I love that with herbal teas, you can still enjoy the ritual of a cold glass of iced tea without worrying about hidden triggers.

🌞 Sun Tea Recipe

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 3–8 hours (depending on sun and strength)
Servings: 1 pitcher

Ingredients

  • 1 pitcher (your favorite size)
  • 4 herbal tea bags (use more for stronger tea)
  • Cold water
  • Lid or press-and-seal wrap

Instructions

  1. Fill your pitcher with cold water and add the tea bags. (Adjust the number of tea bags if you prefer a stronger flavor.)
  2. Cover the pitcher with a lid or press-and-seal wrap to keep out bugs and pollen.
  3. Place the pitcher in a sunny spot outdoors for 3–8 hours. The exact time will depend on the strength of the sun and how strong you like your tea.
  4. Once the tea reaches your desired flavor, bring it inside. Allow it to cool to room temperature before refrigerating—this helps prevent the pitcher from cracking from a sudden temperature change.
  5. Chill until cold, pour over ice, and enjoy!

Tips & Variations

  • Try different herbal teas—hibiscus, peppermint, or chamomile are all delicious and refreshing as Sun Tea.
  • Mix and match multiple flavored teas
  • Add fresh mint or sliced fruit (like lemon or berries) for extra flavor.
  • Make smaller batches if you don’t plan to drink it quickly; Sun Tea is best enjoyed within 2–3 days.

Simple, caffeine-free, and migraine-friendly—Sun Tea is summer in a glass!
